Chapter History

On December 16, 1955, 11 young men affixed their signature to abide by the rules and by-laws of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., to charter a graduate chapter in the city of Macon , Georgia . These charter members were:

  • Bro. Willie H. Wilson
  • Charles W. Ward
  • Bryant H. Price
  • Aaron O. Cook, Jr.
  • Clarence L. Gartrell
  • E.H. Houseworth
  • Cornell E. Brumfield
  • Conrad N. Miller
  • Adolph Parsons
  • John M. Hill
  • Horace L. Hawes

The Regional Director approved the chartering application on the aforementioned date and 23 days later, the International Headquarters of the fraternity, approved the charter on Sunday, January 8, 1956 to establish the Gamma Pi Sigma Chapter under the Presidential leadership of 15th National President, Honorable Brother George D. Flemmings. From this chartering date to a period of the late 1960's there is no record of activities or historical information of the chapter during this time frame. It is assumed that Gamma Pi Sigma Chapter became an inactive chapter at some point between 1956 and 1968.

Reactivation of 1968

However, as time progressed to the late 1960's, Bro. Jerome P. Guy, Georgia State Director, formed a vision to re-activate the Gamma Pi Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., in Macon, Georgia. Being a native of Macon , Georgia , Bro. Guy reached out to local Sigma men in the Macon & Middle Georgia area to assist in the reactivation the chapter. Through this effort, 10 outstanding Sigma men helped Bro. Guy's vision become a reality. In 1968, that vision became a reality and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Gamma Pi Sigma Chapter was re-activated in Macon, Georgia. The 1968 reactivation members of the Gamma Pi Sigma chapter were:

  • Bro. Raymond Baker, President - (Principal, Reynolds Elementary School)
  • Bro. Robert A. Metts - (Principal, Matilda Hartley Elementary School)
  • Bro. Aaron Cook - (Principal & the Vocational Director, Bibb Technical Vocational School)
  • Bro. James Wimberly - (Counselor, Northeast High School)
  • Bro. Charles Adams - (Principal, Bradley Wayside Elementary School)
  • Bro. Robert Middlebrooks - (Employed at the Warner Robins Air Force Base)
  • Bro. Horace Hawes - (Principal, Burke Elementary School)
  • Bro. Henry Bryant - (Principal, Twiggs County)
  • Bro. Alvin Copeland - (Employed at Northeast High School)
  • Bro. Robert Curtis - (Coach, Treutlen County Public School System, Soperton, Georgia)

However, after 4 years of its chartering, the chapter fell upon hard times, thereby forcing the chapter to become an inactive chapter. The chapter was never able to bounce back from this downfall.

Reactivation of 2003

Some thirty years later, life was brought back to Gamma Pi Sigma Chapter by the concerted efforts of dedicated Sigma men like Bro. Jerome P. Guy, former State Director and member of Lambda Sigma Chapter and Honorable Bro. Roswell O. Sutton, 17th Past International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc and also a member of Lambda Sigma Chapter. During the year 2002, Bro. Jerome P. Guy met Bro. Gregory L. Brown who was interested in chartering a chapter in the Macon area; (Bro. Brown not being aware of the chapter that previously existed). After becoming knowledgeable of the history of the local graduate chapter that once existed in the area, Bro. Guy challenged Bro. Brown, to locate about 7 - 10 local Sigma men who would be interested in re-activating the Gamma Pi Sigma chapter. Bro. Brown, with assistance from Bro. Daylon Martin, answered the challenge and a year later in February 2003, the Gamma Pi Sigma chapter was reactivated. The 11 brothers who were instrumental in re-activating the chapter are as follows:

  • Bro. Jerome P. Guy, Chapter Advisor/Treasurer - Retired
  • Bro. Gregory L. Brown, President - Employed with the City of Macon: Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission
  • Bro. Jerome A. Gray, III, Vice-President/Asst. Secretary - Employed with the Boy Scouts of America
  • Bro. Elwyn Hightower, Secretary/Sgt. at Arms - Employed with GEICO Insurance Company

  • Bro. Derrick Bentley - Employed with GEICO Insurance Company
  • Bro. Clarence Hawes - Retired *Omega Chapter September 2004
  • Bro. Russell Odom - Employed with Sportstowner Recreational/Entertainment Facility
  • Bro. Lawrence Marable, DMD - Owner of Marable Dental Center
  • Bro. Daylon Martin - Employed with Northeast High School
  • Bro. Vernon R. Brite, III - Employee with the Medical Center of Central Georgia

As our former National Director of Social Action, Clifton Felton once said, "For Freedom and Human Dignity may we never falter." This phrase certainly epitomizes the dedicated vital force we have for our fraternity. It is our legacy from those who came before us and it is our challenge to see to it that we inculcate the firm foundation upon which this phrase is built into the program of Sigma.

It is our plan that unlimited discussion is given to our major projects: Education, Social Action and Bigger and Better Business Programs. We are the thresholds of unlimited opportunities in the field of business in the State of Georgia. If Sigma is to be the vanguard in promoting the infiltration of black people in the business media, we must encourage them to be educated and prepared.
